About James Z. Lai, M.D.
Dr. James Lai is a native of Taiwan. He came to the United States in 1972 at the age of eight and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Southern Methodist University where he graduated with Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude honors. He then attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha honors in 1992.
Dr. Lai returned to Texas for residency training in ophthalmology at Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital in Dallas. This was followed by a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children's National Medical Center and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Lai remained at Children's National Medical Center as an assistant professor from 1997 until 1999 when he again returned to Texas to join Houston Eye Associates.
Dr. Lai is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology and The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
Dr. Lai specializes in the management of pediatric eye disorders such as strabismus and amblyopia as well as general eye care and evaluation of vision.
Outside of the office, Dr. Lai and his wife Dr. Jenny Lai, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at Methodist Hospital, enjoy spending time with their two children and traveling.
