Merry Z. Ruan, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Merry Ruan is a highly accomplished ophthalmologist with a distinguished background in glaucoma and molecular genetics. She completed a Glaucoma Fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, under the guidance of Dr. Richard K. Parrish II and his colleagues. Prior to this, Dr. Ruan completed her Ophthalmology Residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and a General Surgery Internship at the same institution.

Dr. Ruan’s academic journey is marked by excellence across multiple disciplines. She earned her medical doctorate from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and holds a PhD in Molecular and Human Genetics from Baylor College of Medicine, where her research focused on the genetics and therapy of osteoarthritis. Her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences was completed at Fudan University in Shanghai, China.

Dr. Ruan has contributed significantly to the fields of ophthalmology and genetics through her research. She has authored numerous publications in leading scientific journals, covering topics such as gene therapy for inherited retinal disorders, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma treatment, and innovations in ocular imaging. Her research has been presented at renowned conferences, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Ruan has been recognized with several awards, including the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Travel Grant, the Milton B. Rosenbluth Foundation Award, and many more.

Dr. Ruan’s multidisciplinary expertise in ophthalmology and genetics, combined with her commitment to advancing patient care, positions her as a leader in the treatment of glaucoma and related eye conditions.
