Born in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Prajay Dhir relocated to the Houston area with his family at age six. Attending high school locally, Dr. Dhir graduated from Clear Lake High School ranked number one in his class. Among his honors during this time was placing first in the Texas State Science Fair.
Knowing he wanted to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Dhir was accepted into the Seven Year Accelerated Medical Program at Boston University. This unique program provided simultaneous acceptance to college and medical school right out of high school.
While at Boston University, Dr. Dhir graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Medical Sciences and a minor in Psychology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He then continued on to Boston University School of Medicine where he obtained his Medical Degree in 2001.
Returning home for a year, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals program in Houston. Dr. Dhir then returned to the East Coast for his residency in Ophthalmology at the Boston University/ Boston Medical Center. As a resident, Dr. Dhir developed a keen interest in the diagnosis and management of challenging glaucoma cases. Subsequently, he pursued a fellowship in Glaucoma at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri under the guidance of Dr. Michael Kass, lead author of the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Trial. During this time, Dr. Dhir participated heavily in teaching residents surgery.
Beginning in high school and continuing through the course of his medical education and career, Dr. Dhir has been active in basic science research. Participating in research both at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Dr. Dhir’s work brought into focus new theories on the mechanism of cataract formation.
Dr. Dhir focuses on comprehensive eye care, including the latest techniques in cataract surgery as well as medical and surgical management of patients with glaucoma. He firmly believes in providing all the treatment options to the patient and forming a partnership with them to determine the best course of treatment for that individual patient.
Dr. Dhir and his wife Anita, an internist, enjoy trekking across the globe and attending musical concerts. He is an accomplished black belt in Tae Kwon Do and attempts to stay in shape with a combination of running, tennis, and street hockey.
