About Richard J. Ou, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Richard Ou graduated with honors from Harvard University where he was captain of the varsity swimming team and received many awards including the Rearden Award (Harvard Male Varsity Scholar Athlete), First Team All-Ivy, and Academic All-Ivy team.
He moved to Texas to continue his education at Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as class president from 1995 until 1997. While a medical school student, his research at Baylor was supported by several research grants.
He completed a medicine internship in San Francisco, California, and received his Ophthalmology residency training at Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. Other honors and awards Dr. Ou has received the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology Resident and Fellow Research Award, the Jules Stein Alumni Association Resident Research Grant, the B. Simpson Ophthalmology Award, and the Devgan Outstanding Surgical Resident Award. He has served on the clinical faculty at Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine. He is a surgical instructor for the Baylor ophthalmology residents at the Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center.
Dr. Ou has numerous publications, lectures regularly, and conducts many clinical trials. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons, and belongs to the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Ophthalmological Society. He has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations, including the Mission for Vision, the Chinese American Doctors' Association of Houston, and the Houston Eye Associates Foundation.
Dr. Ou focuses on laser cataract surgery and comprehensive eye care. He is an expert in no-stitch, no-patch, small incision cataract surgery that may eliminate the need for reading glasses. He speaks Spanish, so please feel comfortable bringing your Spanish-speaking friends or relatives.
Dr. Ou and his wife, Sophia, enjoy spending most of their free time with their children, Natalie, Ella, and Ethan. When Dr. Ou is not busy coaching softball or baseball, he is an avid golfer, but you probably couldn't tell by his scores. If you have any golf tips, please provide them during your visit, and he will be very appreciative. He looks forward to seeing you in the clinic.
