What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology, often referred to as ortho-k, is a non-surgical procedure that uses specially designed contact lenses to reshape the cornea while you sleep. By gently and precisely reshaping the cornea, ortho-k lenses correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The result? Clear, crisp vision without the need for glasses or daytime contacts.
Benefits of Orthokeratology
- Freedom from Glasses and Contacts: Say goodbye to the inconvenience of glasses and the discomfort of daytime contacts. With ortho-k, you can wake up each morning to clear vision, ready to tackle the day with confidence.
- Ideal for Active Lifestyles: Whether you're an athlete, enjoy outdoor activities, or lead a busy lifestyle, ortho-k lenses provide unmatched convenience and freedom. Experience clear vision without the hassle of eyewear, allowing you to focus on what matters most.
- Myopia Management: Orthokeratology has shown promising results in managing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and adolescents. By slowing the advancement of myopia, ortho-k lenses can help preserve your child's vision and reduce the risk of future eye health issues.
The Orthokeratology Process
- Comprehensive Consultation: Your journey begins with a thorough eye examination at Houston Eye Associates. Our experienced optometrists will assess your eye health and determine if orthokeratology is the right option for you or your child.
- Customized Lens Fitting: If ortho-k is recommended, our team will custom-fit you with specialized lenses tailored to your unique eye shape and prescription. We'll provide detailed instructions on lens insertion, removal, and care to ensure a smooth transition.
Insertion and Removal Tasks:
-
- Insertion: To insert ortho-k lenses, simply wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Hold the lens on the tip of your index finger, making sure it's not inside out (the edges should flare out slightly). Gently pull down your lower eyelid with your middle finger and use your other hand to hold your upper eyelid open. Look up and place the lens on your eye, then release your eyelids slowly to allow the lens to settle.
- Removal: To remove ortho-k lenses, start by washing your hands. Look up and pull down your lower eyelid with your middle finger. With your index finger, gently touch the bottom edge of the lens and slide it down onto the white part of your eye. Pinch the lens gently between your thumb and index finger and remove it from your eye.
Overnight Reshaping: Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight while you sleep. As you rest, the lenses gently reshape your cornea, correcting your vision. Upon waking, simply remove the lenses and enjoy clear, crisp vision throughout the day.
Ongoing Support: Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor your progress and ensure the continued success of orthokeratology. Our dedicated team will be there every step of the way to address any questions or concerns you may have.
